SANGUINIUS
This piece, titled Sanguinius, is a pen-and-ink drawing inside the front cover of a 6 x 9 journal that depicts a legendary hero named Sanguinius. He was the son of the Emperor and the father of a legion of soldiers known as the Blood Angels (Warhammer 40,000).
The Blood Angels, before Sanguinius, were a group of rabble and barbarians, but once unified under his rule, they became artisans, craftsmen, and musicians. The drawing shows Sanguinius’ legion behind him, ready for battle, as he stands at the front with his spear in hand.
I used a standard $2.00 pen to complete this piece.
To achieve the gritty, dark mood, I used chiaroscuro lighting technique inspired by old Baroque paintings, combined with cross-hatching and shading influenced by my favorite inker, Bernie Wrightson. Through this work, I aimed to convey pride, strength, and grace as Sanguinius stands before his sons, ready for the conflicts ahead.
